The Name of this Blog
The name of this blog, One Thousand Fables, is a translation of the poetic name for the nightingale in Persian. Hezaar Dastaan means, literally, a thousand verses (in the literary, not ecclesiastical sense). The nightingale is known for the variety of its songs. In Persian culture, a nightingale, or bol bol, is someone who, upon hearing new words or songs, can use them effortlessly. For a language learner, it's considered a compliment.
The Purpose of this Blog
The purpose is tied to the title of this post. Figuratively speaking, when someone is "dual-hatting" something, they're acting as two things at the same time. Another use of the term "hat" comes from internet security: if you're testing the security of a network or system, but you have the authorization to do so, it's considered "white hat." If you don't, it's "black hat."
I'm writing this blog for 2 reasons. 1) I have decided to obtain another hat. 2) I think it would be wise to start documenting my other hats.
As my wife moves further into the world of writing, by starting her own blog, I've decided to follow her. I have yet to participate in NaNoWriMo, my degree wasn't in English, and I have had little formal training in creative writing.
So, what makes me feel like I should invest bucket-loads of hours into writing stories when there are people out there better trained, better prepared, and better connected, especially if I probably won't get published or make money?
I like telling stories. That's all.
This blog will have some writing exercises from the Writing Excuses podcast, some descriptions of other projects that I've done (wearing other hats), and posts about things that I feel are important, or at least worth passing on.
